Report from guests Tuomas and Juuso:

An incredible fishing season opener in Gotland!

The season started for us with some sea trout fishing in Gotland. This was the third spring for our group as fishing guests of Fishyourdream. As we met up with our guide, Per, at the airport and heard the latest fishing news, the anxiety that had built up during the long ice cold winter finally started to show some signs of relief. The endless fly tying and gear fixing was finally over!
In the morning we were all ready as scouts for some trout fishing. We divided to two groups, the other one fishing with flies and the other one with lures. Per guided the fly group and our other guide, Kenny, the lure men. The weather was completely sunny and the sea calm which was not the ideal fishing weather according to our guides. Thus our expectations were not too high when hitting the waters. On the previous trips we had been fishing our “traditional” places in the west and north, but these spots were now covered with algae. The water was also a bit colder than during the previous years, only about four degrees. Because of these issues and our desire of testing new fishing spots as well, we decided to head east and south. Instead of fishing near capes and rocks as we were used to, we headed to shallow bays were the water was warmer. For us these spots were a step into the unknown, where the guides’ expertise proved to be priceless.
After an hour of fishing a nice breeze started to build up from the sea. The surface of the sea started to ripple and Per mentioned that there should be some fish coming in at any moment. Immediately after Per had said that we heard the first “fish on” shout! Tuomas opened the score with a beautiful trout of 78 centimeters. During the next two hours five more fish are being photographed while one got away after the bite. We also received news from the lure team that they had gotten three fish and several had gotten away. We would never have been expecting such a start for our trip in our wildest dreams!
During the next days the wind built up and we also fished our traditional places. We got three more fish and dropped some. Most of the fish were still brown, but for us this was not an issue. We celebrated each fish with appropriate means. All the fish were between 45 and 78 centimeters.
All in all the trip was a brilliant success, and because of the events in Iceland at the same time we even got an extra day of fishing as our flights were cancelled. While the other travelers heading back home were cursing their luck, we enjoyed an extra day of fishing in Gotland with great pleasure. The ferry trips back to Finland went quickly as we were already planning the trips next year. As an icing on the cake we noticed that the sea was free of ice in Finland and we could continue our fishing season hopefully as successfully as it had begun!

"I thought it was AWESOME. I liked the active fishing when you at all times tried to find fish by considering weather, wind, time and previous experiences, and that is where your expertise comes in. Would have been difficult to do it without your experience. Cabins were very nice and well equipped. The guides were good and always sharing the information, a big plus for them! Meeting service at the ferry made you feel welcome from the beginning.
